Leadership Skills

What makes a great Leader?

Excellence of character

Contributing/caring the most

Great sense of humour

Courage to stick their neck out and cause a stir

Rebellion against status quo

Understanding how to change the status quo

Listening to those they lead

Understanding and acting on what you hear

Having the insight to live your vision

The ability to empower their followers to achieve great things themselves

We are ALL leaders and followers depending on the context in our lives….look at the list above and ask yourself which of those skills do you need to develop in order to be a more effective leader.

How does a great leader deal with conflict from opponents?

Extermination of opponents

Excommunication/exile of opponents

Ridicule/humiliation of other

Striving to be better than opponents

Understanding of the other’s perspective

Not responding immediately but pondering the issues for 48 hours before reacting

To never stoop to the levels of their opponents….to take the moral high ground.

Understanding that there will always be opponents

Listening to what opponents say without prejudice (they might teach you something useful)

Using what they say to understand why you act as you do.

Understanding why the other's perspective works for competitors

Compete on quality, not price. Anyone can be the cheapest for the time it takes to phone up a competitor, but it is harder to dislodge the best.

Understand the targets which competitors set for you.

Leave space for your competitor to become your ally if they so choose

How do YOU deal with your competitors in life and work? Which of the strategies do you think you could practice more?
