The Power of Asking the Right Questions
In the coaching world, one of the ways we distinguish between a successful person and a struggler is in the way they think. “What we think is what we are” ….who was it that said “I think, therefore I am”…was it Descartes?
Well, millions of people are aware of this knowledge but fail to apply it to their own lives.
“What are YOU thinking?”…..a great way to become consciously aware of what you are thinking is to ask yourself what your “primary question” is. Our mind is quite clever at providing us with answers to our own questions but we need to be clever about what we are asking in the first place.
For example, if Mother Theresa had asked “Why isn’t the government doing anything to help all these poor children in the streets?” Her mind would have brought up all kinds of “reasons/excuses/justifications” but would this disempowering question have changed anything? Instead she asked herself, or “God” “How can I help?” and she received answers to THAT empowering question which changed the lives of millions of people who were touched by her kindness.
In ANY situation that you find yourself, easy or challenging…ask yourself, “What is my primary question here?”….your results will be largely determined by the question you asked yourself…..for example in an argument, “How can I win this argument?” will produce a very different result to “How can I make myself understood?”
Your outcomes or results are often the consequences of the questions you have been asking yourself.
