231103b How to be an entrepreneur instead of an employee? I listened to quite a few entrepreneurs at the Business Startup conference at the Excel centre this weekend and one of the common themes was the lack of support that entrepreneurs get at the beginning when they need it the most. So many of the multi-millionaire entrepreneurs speaking at the conference told stories of how their families were often the most destructive saboteurs who could not tolerate the notion of someone converting from employee to entrepreneur….one of them has even written a book about this called “My family doesn’t understand me! Coping strategies for the entrepreneur” http://www.oaktreepress.com/ He talked about the language of entrepreneurs, “entrepreneese” which is not understood by families who have been conditioned/programmed with the belief that you have to go to school for 12 years to get a good job, full stop. He said that society conspired with schools to basically imprison children for 12 years to mould them into a form that would be “usable” in terms of making the child employable…..entrepreneurs often say proudly of themselves “I am unemployable” . I have also heard Reuben Singh (the multi-millionaire who started the Miss Attitude chain at the age of 17 and became a millionaire in a couple of years) mention that his father didn’t speak to him for 2 years when he chose to engage in business rather than study. In contrast, Charles Handy, an entrepreneur himself, told his children that they could pursue any career they wished but that he would only be disappointed if they chose to get “jobs”…..the point being that a job is too small for a brilliant mind. However, many business owners have made “jobs” out of their business…..you will know if you have made a “job” out of your business if you cannot take a week off without losing money….. |
